STCW 1.27 Model Generic ECDIS Course
In conjunction with the professional trainers from ECDIS Ltd we are offering and hosting the STCW 1.27 Model, DNV approved, Generic ECDIS Course in Mallorca in our new dedicated training facility
The course has been designed for candidates for certification as officers in charge of a navigational watch, for experienced nautical officers and other persons with navigational responsibilities. Those attending the course should therefore have experience in performing chartwork and should be able to practice all usual tasks concerning standard navigational procedures and equipment. They should also know about the functions and limitations of other navigational equipment.
Based on the IMO 1.27 model, the course has been optimised so it fulfils the 40-hour requirement whilst also covering additional subjects that are considered pertinent to safe ECDIS operation.
The course is run in English by trainers from ECDIS Ltd who are specialist navigators that are highly experienced in the practical use of ECDIS, having pushed such systems to their limits at sea. Combined, the ECDIS Ltd trainers have taught over 1000 mariners.
The course is in accordance with the IMO 1.27 Model Course and the content is specifically laid down to adhere to it. The basic topics are:
Concept & Capability
Principal Types of Electronic Chart
Adding Information & Manual Corrections
Defining Safe Water
Limiting Danger Lines & Clearing Bearings

Confined Waters Planning
Course Duration, Size and Location

The course is approved by Det Norske Veritas (DNV). A certificate will be issued on completion of the course. Most flag states accept DNV approval. Ask your flag state to check they accept DNV approval.
It will be mandatory for masters and deck officers from Jan 2012 to have conducted generic ECDIS training in accordance with the Manila Amendments to STCW for all vessels that are using ECDIS as the primary means of navigation on Merchant and Fishing Vessels, Commercially or Privately Operated Yachts and Sail Training Vessels.
Flag State dependant, it is already a requirement to do so, and also mandatory to have had training on ECDIS if your vessel is only fitted with one as a navigation aid. MCA MIN 405 is an example of the type of flag state legislation in this regard.
